Thumbnails that survive every screen

The bottom-right corner is taken. YouTube puts the video length over the lower-right corner of every thumbnail. Keep text, faces and logos out of that corner.

Readable at the smallest size. The same image appears huge on a TV and tiny in the mobile sidebar. Three or four bold words and one clear face or object work at every size; a busy collage does not.

4K thumbnails are now possible. YouTube raised the thumbnail file limit from 2 MB to 50 MB in 2026 so creators can upload 4K thumbnails for big screens. 1280×720 is still the recommended size; if you want the extra detail, resize to 3840×2160 instead — same 16:9 shape.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

1280×720 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, at least 640 pixels wide. JPG, PNG or GIF (not animated) are accepted, and the file limit is now 50 MB.

Why can’t I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?

Custom thumbnails need a verified account (phone verification) in YouTube Studio. If the option is there but fails, check the file is JPG, PNG or GIF and under the size limit.

What happened to the 2 MB thumbnail limit?

YouTube raised it to 50 MB in 2026 so creators can upload 4K thumbnails. A 1280×720 thumbnail is normally far smaller than either limit.

Does a 1280×720 thumbnail look blurry on a TV?

It looks fine on most screens. For the sharpest result on large TVs you can now upload a 3840×2160 version with the same layout.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
