Getting the Facebook group cover right

Group covers are taller than the covers on profiles and Pages, so a banner made for one rarely fits the other without losing the top, bottom or sides.

👥

Made for groups

1640×856 matches the group header, which is taller than a profile cover.

👀

First impression for new members

The cover sits above the Join button — make the topic obvious.

📏

Leave a margin

Apps trim edges slightly differently; keep text away from the borders.

About 220 KB–440 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 1640×856 saves to roughly 220 KB–440 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

You choose the crop

Filling 1640×856 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 30% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

Why group covers need their own size

A different shape. A group cover is much taller than a profile cover — about 1.91:1 instead of 2.7:1. A profile banner reused on a group gets stretched or loses its top and bottom, so it pays to resize for the group separately.

Say what the group is for. New visitors decide whether to join from the cover. A clear photo plus the group’s name or topic in a few big words works better than a collage of members.

Keep the edges for decoration. Different apps trim the cover slightly differently, so leave a margin around the important part and keep text away from the very top and bottom.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Facebook group cover photo?

1640×856 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. Keep the main subject and any text in the centre so it is not trimmed on phones.

Can I use my Page cover for a group?

Not without cropping: group covers are a taller 1.91:1 shape. Resize the same artwork to 1640×856 here and reposition it for the group.

Why is my group cover blurry?

It was probably enlarged from a small image. Start from a photo at least 1640 pixels wide, or use a simpler graphic that scales well.

Is the group cover shown the same on phones?

It is shown smaller and can be trimmed slightly at the edges, so keep text away from the borders.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
