Keeping your story clear of the stickers and buttons

Safe zones. The top of a story holds your profile name and progress bars; the bottom holds the reply box and send button. Keep text at least about 150 pixels from the top and 250 pixels from the bottom of a 1080×1920 image.

Leave space for stickers. Polls, links and mentions are added on top in the app. Plan an empty area, usually in the lower middle, where they can go without covering faces.

Posting a feed photo as a story leaves bands around it. Resize it to 9:16 here, choosing the part to keep, or use the fit option to put the whole photo on a background.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Instagram Story?

1080×1920 pixels (9:16). Keep text about 150 pixels from the top and 250 pixels from the bottom so the app’s buttons do not cover it.

Why does Instagram zoom in on my story photo?

If the photo is not 9:16, Instagram fills the screen by zooming and cropping. Resize it to 1080×1920 first to control the crop.

Can I post a landscape photo to my story without cropping?

Yes — tick the fit option. The whole photo is placed on the 9:16 canvas with bands above and below.

Are Stories and Reels the same size?

Yes, both are 1080×1920. Reels covers have an extra grid crop — see the Reels cover resizer.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
