Winning the search grid

The thumbnail decides the click. In search results buyers only see the first photo, cropped to fit the grid. A product that is centred, well lit and fills most of the frame stands out among dozens of similar listings.

Square survives every crop. Etsy shows thumbnails in slightly different shapes on the website, in the app and in your shop. Etsy’s advice is to leave enough border so they can be cropped without losing the product — a centred square does exactly that.

Adjust after upload. Etsy lets you adjust the thumbnail crop of the first photo. With a centred square, the default crop is usually already right.
