Getting the Snapchat geofilter right

Snapchat filters are transparent overlays for events, venues and businesses. They must be a tall transparent PNG under 300 KB.

🎪

Overlay, not a photo

Most of the filter must be transparent.

⚠

~210 px margins

Keep the top and bottom free for different screens.

💾

About 390 KB–790 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 1080×2340 saves to roughly 390 KB–790 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

You choose the crop

Filling 1080×2340 from a 3:4 phone photo trims about 38% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

Making an overlay, not a picture

Transparent PNG. A geofilter is an overlay: most of it must be see-through so people can still see their own Snap. Design on a transparent background and keep this page’s output as PNG, which preserves the transparency.

Tall modern screens. Current filter templates are 1080×2340 to fit taller phone screens (older guides mention 1080×1920). Keep about 210 pixels free at the top and bottom for screens that crop it.

Under 300 KB. Snapchat limits filter files to 300 KB. A PNG that is mostly transparent is usually small; if yours is larger, simplify gradients or use fewer colours.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Snapchat geofilter?

1080×2340 pixels as a PNG with a transparent background, under 300 KB. Keep about 210 pixels free at the top and bottom.

Why is my geofilter rejected for size?

Files must be under 300 KB. Reduce colours or remove large semi-transparent areas, then save as PNG again.

Does this keep my transparent background?

Yes, as long as the output is PNG (set by default on this page). JPG cannot store transparency.

How much of the screen can a filter cover?

Keep it to the edges — a band at the top or bottom, or a frame — so people can still see their own Snap.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
