Resize Image to 256×256

256×256 is the biggest image a standard Windows .ico file holds, a power-of-two texture size for games, and a common input size for image models. Plenty of software expects exactly this. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Need a smaller file instead? Compress or convert.

Why choose 256×256?

256×256 gives a square canvas with a 1:1 ratio and 0.07 MP of detail. People most often need it for desktop icons and avatars.

▢

1:1 square shape

The square (1:1) proportion decides how your photo is framed: plan the subject around that shape before you crop.

🎯

The exact size needed

256×256 is the exact size for desktop icons and avatars, so your image is shown as-is instead of being re-scaled or cropped by the platform.

🖨

Prints 0.85×0.85 in at 300 DPI

That is 2.2×2.2 cm at photo quality, or 1.7×1.7 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.

💾

About 10 KB–20 KB as JPG

Expect around 10 KB–20 KB for a JPG photo at this size. Simple graphics are smaller, PNG photos several times larger.

✨

Sharp results

A 12 MP phone photo has 186× more pixels than 256×256, so resizing down keeps it sharp.

✂

Framing control

Filling 256×256 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

Three jobs for a 256×256 image

Windows icons. A full .ico file stacks several sizes — typically 16, 32, 48 and 256. Windows uses the 256 frame for large desktop icons and high-DPI Explorer views. Make a clean 256×256 PNG here, then build the multi-size file with PNG to ICO.

Game and 3D textures. 256 is a power of two, so it maps and mipmaps cleanly. It is common for item icons, UI panels and low-detail surfaces. For tiling textures, make sure the edges line up before resizing, since resizing cannot fix a visible seam.

Machine-learning inputs. Many image models and datasets use 256×256, sometimes cropping to 224×224 afterwards. If you are preparing a dataset, decide whether to crop or pad non-square images first so every file is treated the same way.

PNG keeps it exact. Use PNG for icons and textures; JPG artefacts are visible when these images are scaled or tiled.

Batch it. Drop a whole folder in and download a ZIP of 256×256 files.

Related: 128×128 and 64×64 for smaller icon frames, 512×512 for a master, and 512×256 for 2:1 textures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest size an ICO file can hold?

The classic ICO format tops out at 256×256 pixels per frame. That is why 256×256 is usually the largest size in a Windows icon set; smaller frames such as 48, 32 and 16 sit alongside it.

What aspect ratio is 256×256?

256×256 has a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Any size with the same ratio — for example 250×250, 240×240 — can be scaled to it without cropping.

How big will a 256×256 image print?

At 300 DPI (photo quality) 256×256 prints at 0.85×0.85 inches (2.2×2.2 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 1.71×1.71 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.

How large is a 256×256 file?

A photo at 256×256 is usually 10 KB–20 KB as a JPG, and about 7 KB–14 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.

Will my photo lose quality at 256×256?

No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.

Can I resize to 256×256 without cropping?

Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 256×256. Without it, the image fills 256×256 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 1:1 shape are trimmed.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
