Why resize an image before printing?

Printers and print shops scale whatever you send them. Sending the exact size, at the right resolution, means no surprise cropping, no blurry enlargements and no white borders.

  1. Add your image, or drop it onto the box. A4 at 300 DPI is selected to start with.
  2. Open Templates → Paper or Photo prints and pick your size; drag the preview to frame it, or tick Fit to keep everything.
  3. Click Resize, download, and print at 100% (“actual size”).

Pixels, DPI and print size — in plain words

A digital image is measured in pixels; paper is measured in inches or millimetres. DPI (dots per inch) links the two: at 300 DPI, every inch of paper uses 300 pixels. That is why an A4 page (8.27×11.69 in) needs 2480×3508 pixels for a sharp print, a 4×6 photo needs 1200×1800, and an 8×10 needs 2400×3000.

How sharp is sharp enough? 300 DPI is the standard for photos and anything viewed up close. 200 DPI still looks good for most prints. Posters seen from a few metres away can go down to 150 DPI, which is why large prints need fewer pixels per inch than you might expect.

If your photo has fewer pixels than the size needs, resizing up makes it bigger but not more detailed — it will look soft. A 12-megapixel phone photo (4032×3024) covers A4 at about 345 DPI, so it prints beautifully; a 1080-pixel social media image only reaches about 130 DPI on A4.

Shapes differ, too: phone photos are 4:3, while A4 is about 1:1.41 and 4×6 is 2:3. Fill crops a little to cover the whole page — drag to choose what stays. Fit whole image inside keeps everything and leaves a margin. Finally, print at 100% / actual size; “fit to page” in the print dialog would rescale it again.

Frequently asked questions

What size in pixels is an A4 print?

2480×3508 pixels at 300 DPI, or 1748×2480 at 211 DPI. US Letter is 2550×3300 at 300 DPI.

What DPI should I use for printing?

300 DPI for photos and documents viewed up close, 200 DPI for everyday prints, 150 DPI for large posters seen from a distance.

Can I make a small photo print larger?

You can enlarge it, but it will not gain detail. Check its pixel size: a 4×6 print needs 1200×1800 pixels for full sharpness.

How do I avoid white borders?

Leave Fit unticked so the image fills the page, and choose borderless printing in your printer settings if it offers it.

Why does my print come out the wrong size?

The print dialog is set to “fit to page” or “scale”. Choose 100% or actual size.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is resized in your browser and saved with 300 DPI information on your device.
