Getting the Facebook banner right

A “Facebook banner” is the cover image across the top of a profile or Page. Designing at the exact desktop display size keeps graphics and text pixel-perfect.

📐

Exact desktop size

No scaling on computers, so small text and thin lines stay crisp.

📱

Plan for the phone crop

The 16:9 phone view trims the sides — keep words in the middle.

🎨

Best for graphic banners

Announcements, sales and seasonal designs with flat colours and text.

💾

Tiny, fast file

A banner this size is usually only a few dozen KB as JPG or PNG.

💾

About 40 KB–80 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 820×312 saves to roughly 40 KB–80 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

✂

You choose the crop

Filling 820×312 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 49% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

Designing at the size people see

Pixel for pixel. At 820×312 the banner is shown on a computer without being scaled at all, so thin lines, small type and logos look exactly as you made them. It is a good choice for graphic banners with text.

Check the phone crop. Phones show the banner at a 16:9 shape (640×360), which cuts the left and right of an 820×312 design. Keep the important part in the middle 555 pixels or so of the width.

Photos or graphics? For a photograph, the slightly larger 851×315 or the high-resolution 1640×624 are better choices; this size is ideal for flat designs, announcements and seasonal banners.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Facebook banner on a computer?

Facebook shows the cover banner at about 820×312 pixels on a computer and 640×360 on phones. Designing at 820×312 means desktop visitors see it unscaled.

Is 820×312 or 851×315 better for a Facebook banner?

Both have nearly the same shape. 820×312 matches the desktop display exactly, which suits text graphics; 851×315 is the commonly recommended upload for photos. Either works.

Why does text on my Facebook banner look blurry?

Facebook compresses covers as JPG. For a banner with text, save it as PNG at exactly 820×312 so it is not rescaled, and keep the text large.

Can I use the same banner on my group?

Groups use a different, taller shape. Use the group cover resizer (1640×856) instead.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
