Getting the LinkedIn profile photo right

The profile photo is the most-seen image on LinkedIn. A square 400×400 headshot stays sharp in the circle on your profile, in messages and in search results.

◯

Shown as a circle

Corners are hidden — keep your face in the middle.

👤

Head and shoulders

A face filling about 60% of the frame is easy to recognise.

💬

Seen everywhere

Messages, comments, applications and search results all use it.

🌄

Plain background

Remove a busy background for a cleaner, more professional look.

💾

About 25 KB–50 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 400×400 saves to roughly 25 KB–50 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

✂

You choose the crop

Filling 400×400 from a 3:4 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

A headshot that looks professional at any size

Head and shoulders. LinkedIn shows the photo as a circle. A crop from just above the top of your head to below the shoulders, with your face taking about 60% of the frame, looks natural and recognisable even when tiny.

Plain background, good light. A clean background keeps the attention on you. If yours is busy, remove it with the background remover and choose a soft colour or white before resizing.

Larger is fine. 400×400 is the size most guides recommend; LinkedIn accepts larger squares too. What matters is that the image is square and sharp.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a LinkedIn profile photo be?

400×400 pixels is the usual recommendation; any larger square works too. LinkedIn shows it as a circle, so keep your face centred.

Why is my LinkedIn photo blurry?

The original was probably small or tightly cropped. Start from a larger photo and resize it down to 400×400.

Should my LinkedIn photo have a white background?

It does not have to, but a plain, light background looks professional and keeps attention on your face.

Is the company logo the same size?

Company Pages use a logo of 300×300. See the company logo resizer.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
