Resize Image to 40×40

40×40 is a common avatar size in comment threads, chat sidebars and contact lists — big enough to recognise a face, small enough to stack dozens down a page. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Need a smaller file instead? Compress or convert.

Why choose 40×40?

At 40×40 pixels, an image holds 0 megapixels in a square (1:1). It is a common choice for icons, emoji and favicons.

▢

1:1 square shape

Every 40×40 image has a square (1:1) ratio, so anything you design for it keeps the same proportions on every screen.

🎯

Where it is used

40×40 suits icons, emoji and favicons. Using the exact size avoids a website scaling or cropping your image on its own.

🖨

Prints 0.13×0.13 in at 300 DPI

That is 0.3×0.3 cm at photo quality, or 0.3×0.3 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.

💾

About 0 KB–0 KB as JPG

Expect around 0 KB–0 KB for a JPG photo at this size. Simple graphics are smaller, PNG photos several times larger.

✨

Sharp results

A 12 MP phone photo has 7,620× more pixels than 40×40, so resizing down keeps it sharp.

✂

Framing control

Filling 40×40 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

Getting a face to read at 40 pixels

At 40×40 a face is roughly 30 pixels across once you allow for a little background. That is enough to be recognisable only if the face fills the frame. A full-body shot or a group photo resized this small becomes anonymous.

Crop to head and shoulders first. Use the cropper with the square ratio, frame from just above the hair to the top of the shoulders, then resize here. The eyes should sit roughly a third of the way down.

Circles cut the corners. Many sites display avatars as circles, which hides the four corners of your square. Keep anything important away from the edges.

Deliver at 2× if you can. A slot drawn at 40 CSS pixels uses 80 real pixels on a high-DPI phone. If you control the site, upload an 100×100 or larger and let the page scale it. Use exact 40×40 when a form or template insists on it.

Format. JPG is fine for photos and tiny in file size at this scale. Use PNG if the avatar is a logo or needs a transparent background.

Slightly bigger options: 50×50 for older templates, 64×64 for sharper list icons.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 40×40 avatar look blurry on my phone?

Phones have high-DPI screens, so a 40-pixel slot is drawn with 80 or 120 real pixels. A 40×40 file has to be stretched to fill it. If the site allows, upload a larger square such as 120×120 or 200×200 and let it scale down.

What aspect ratio is 40×40?

40×40 has a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Any size with the same ratio — for example 32×32, 50×50 — can be scaled to it without cropping.

How big will a 40×40 image print?

At 300 DPI (photo quality) 40×40 prints at 0.13×0.13 inches (0.3×0.3 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 0.27×0.27 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.

How large is a 40×40 file?

A photo at 40×40 is usually 0 KB–0 KB as a JPG, and about 0 KB–0 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.

Will my photo lose quality at 40×40?

No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.

Can I resize to 40×40 without cropping?

Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 40×40. Without it, the image fills 40×40 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 1:1 shape are trimmed.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
