Resize Image to 150×150

150×150 is the default thumbnail square in WordPress and the size a lot of avatar systems, directory listings and product grids settled on years ago. It is small enough to load instantly and big enough to still read on a phone. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Need a smaller file instead? Compress or convert.

Why choose 150×150?

150×150 gives a square canvas with a 1:1 ratio and 0.02 MP of detail. People most often need it for avatars, icons and thumbnails.

▢

1:1 square shape

Every 150×150 image has a square (1:1) ratio, so anything you design for it keeps the same proportions on every screen.

🎯

Where it is used

150×150 suits avatars, icons and thumbnails. Using the exact size avoids a website scaling or cropping your image on its own.

🖨

Prints 0.5×0.5 in at 300 DPI

That is 1.3×1.3 cm at photo quality, or 1×1 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.

💾

About 4 KB–7 KB as JPG

Expect around 4 KB–7 KB for a JPG photo at this size. Simple graphics are smaller, PNG photos several times larger.

✨

Sharp results

A 12 MP phone photo has 542× more pixels than 150×150, so resizing down keeps it sharp.

✂

Framing control

Filling 150×150 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

Where 150×150 comes from and when to use it

If you have ever uploaded an image to WordPress, it quietly generated a 150×150 copy alongside it — that is the built-in thumbnail size, and it has been the default for well over a decade. Plenty of themes, plugins, membership directories and comment systems inherited it.

The practical catch is that 150×150 was chosen before high-DPI screens were normal. On a modern phone a 150-pixel image displayed at 150 CSS pixels is being stretched to 300 or 450 device pixels, which is why old thumbnails look soft on new phones. If the platform lets you upload larger and resizes on its own end, give it the larger file. Use this page when the upload has to be exactly 150×150.

Because it is a square, anything not already 1:1 loses its long edge. A 4:3 photo gives up about a quarter of its width; a 16:9 screenshot loses more than 40%. At this size the crop matters more than usual — a face that was comfortably centred in the full frame can end up half out of the thumbnail. Crop deliberately with the cropper, then come back here.

Output format: PNG for logos, icons and anything with text or flat colour; JPG is fine for photographs and will be a few kilobytes smaller. Either way the file will be tiny — usually well under 30KB.

Frequently asked questions

Is 150×150 still a good thumbnail size?

It is fine where the slot is fixed at 150 pixels, but it looks soft on high-DPI phone screens because they render it at two or three times that density. If the platform accepts a larger upload and resizes server-side, send it 300×300 or 450×450 instead and let it downscale.

What aspect ratio is 150×150?

150×150 has a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Any size with the same ratio — for example 144×144, 128×128 — can be scaled to it without cropping.

How big will a 150×150 image print?

At 300 DPI (photo quality) 150×150 prints at 0.5×0.5 inches (1.3×1.3 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 1×1 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.

How large is a 150×150 file?

A photo at 150×150 is usually 4 KB–7 KB as a JPG, and about 2 KB–5 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.

Will my photo lose quality at 150×150?

No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.

Can I resize to 150×150 without cropping?

Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 150×150. Without it, the image fills 150×150 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 1:1 shape are trimmed.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
