WebP was built by Google specifically to replace both JPG and PNG at once, and it mostly succeeds: it supports lossy compression like JPG, lossless compression and transparency like PNG, and typically produces smaller files than either at matched quality — commonly 25–35% smaller than JPG, and around 25–30% smaller than PNG.
The one place it still loses is outside the browser. Older desktop software, some email clients, and a handful of print workflows still do not read WebP. Every current browser does, which is why it has become the default format for web images while conversions to it for other purposes still sometimes bounce off older tools.
