What is a GIF file?
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF stores a maximum of 256 colours per image and supports simple animation. It is the oldest format still in common use on the web.
The 256-colour limit makes GIF a poor choice for photographs, which end up visibly banded. For still images PNG is almost always better.

GIF is the oldest format on this site, dating to 1987, and it shows: a 256-colour palette limit means anything with gradients or photographic detail gets approximated through dithering, visible as banding or a speckled texture. Flat graphics with a handful of colours — simple icons, line art, basic diagrams — survive the conversion cleanly.
The one thing GIF still does that nothing else on this site replicates is simple, universally-supported animation. If you are converting to GIF for that reason, note that this tool handles still images; an existing animated source will convert to its first frame only.
