How to convert GIF to JPG

GIF is limited to 256 colours, so still images stored as GIF often look banded. Converting to JPG restores the full colour range and usually produces a smaller file too.

  1. Click the Choose Files button and select your GIF files.
  2. JPG is already selected as the output. Click the gear if you want to adjust quality or resize.
  3. Click Convert, then hit Download to save your JPG files, or grab them all as a ZIP.

Built for GIF files

Drop in as many GIF images as you like and they all come out as JPG. You can also change the output on any individual file if you need a mixed batch.

◉

Keep the quality

Adjust quality per file and resize on the way through. Formats without transparency get a clean white matte instead of the black edges most converters leave behind.

🔒

Nothing is uploaded

Your files are read and written by your own browser. They are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no size or file-count limit.

More image tools

Three separate tools, all running the same way — entirely inside your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The compressor is the one to use when you want a smaller file without changing its format — it can hit an exact target file size, which the converter cannot. The resizer handles exact dimensions and ready-made presets for Instagram and YouTube, including common sizes like 1920×1080 and 1080×1080.

A few things are built into this converter and need no separate tool:

  1. Compress without converting — pick the same format as your input and lower the quality slider to shrink a file while keeping its type.
  2. Resize — open the gear on any file and set a maximum width; the height follows automatically.
  3. Images to PDF — choose PDF as the output to turn a photo or scan into a document.
  4. Make a favicon — choose ICO as the output to produce a browser icon from any square image.
What is a GIF file?

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF stores a maximum of 256 colours per image and supports simple animation. It is the oldest format still in common use on the web.

The 256-colour limit makes GIF a poor choice for photographs, which end up visibly banded. For still images PNG is almost always better.

What is a JPG file?

JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice in order to produce a much smaller file.

JPG cannot store transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG degrades it a little each time.

GIF to JPG: two things are lost

Animation goes first. A GIF holds a sequence of frames and a JPG holds one picture, so you receive the opening frame and nothing else. If the motion is what mattered, this is the wrong conversion.

Transparency goes second — GIF's transparent pixels become white, because JPG has no alpha channel.

There is also a quirk specific to this pair. GIFs are limited to 256 colours and frequently use dithering, a fine speckled pattern, to fake the missing shades. JPG compression tends to smear that pattern into blotches rather than reproducing it cleanly. Converting a dithered GIF to PNG usually looks better and is often smaller too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the animation when converting GIF to JPG?

No. JPG stores a single still image with no support for frames, so you get the first frame of the animation. To keep motion you would need to convert to an animated format such as WebP or a video file.

Will I lose transparency converting GIF to JPG?

Yes — JPG cannot store transparent pixels, so any transparent area has to be filled with a solid colour. This tool fills with white, which is what most people expect. Many converters fill with black and leave you with dark edges. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP or AVIF instead.

Does converting GIF to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly, by design. JPG uses lossy compression to make the file smaller. At the default quality of 85 the difference is invisible on most images. Raise the quality slider if you are working with fine detail, text or flat colour.

Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.

Are my GIF files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are read and written by your own browser and never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the converter will still work.
