How to convert JPG to PNG

Converting JPG to PNG stops any further quality loss and gives you a file that supports transparency, which is useful if you plan to edit the image further.

  1. Click the Choose Files button and select your JPG files.
  2. PNG is already selected as the output. Click the gear if you want to adjust quality or resize.
  3. Click Convert, then hit Download to save your PNG files, or grab them all as a ZIP.
⇄

Built for JPG files

Drop in as many JPG images as you like and they all come out as PNG. You can also change the output on any individual file if you need a mixed batch.

◉

Keep the quality

Adjust quality per file and resize on the way through. Formats without transparency get a clean white matte instead of the black edges most converters leave behind.

🔒

Nothing is uploaded

Your files are read and written by your own browser. They are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no size or file-count limit.

More image tools

Three separate tools, all running the same way — entirely inside your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The compressor is the one to use when you want a smaller file without changing its format — it can hit an exact target file size, which the converter cannot. The resizer handles exact dimensions and ready-made presets for Instagram and YouTube, including common sizes like 1920×1080 and 1080×1080.

A few things are built into this converter and need no separate tool:

  1. Compress without converting — pick the same format as your input and lower the quality slider to shrink a file while keeping its type.
  2. Resize — open the gear on any file and set a maximum width; the height follows automatically.
  3. Images to PDF — choose PDF as the output to turn a photo or scan into a document.
  4. Make a favicon — choose ICO as the output to produce a browser icon from any square image.
What is a JPG file?

JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice in order to produce a much smaller file.

JPG cannot store transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG degrades it a little each time.

What is a PNG file?

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. PNG is a lossless format, which means every pixel is preserved exactly as it was. It also supports transparency, so it is the usual choice for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic with sharp edges or text.

Because nothing is thrown away, PNG files of photographs are often several times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.

What converting JPG to PNG does and does not do

This conversion cannot recover quality. Whatever detail the JPG discarded when it was first saved is gone permanently, and any compression artifacts already in the image get preserved perfectly by PNG's lossless encoding. You are freezing the current state, not restoring the original.

It also does not create transparency. A JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG you get out is fully opaque — you will still need an editor to cut a background out. Expect the file to grow substantially, often three to ten times, because PNG stores every pixel exactly.

The genuine use case is editing. Each time you re-save a JPG it degrades again, so converting to PNG first and working from that avoids stacking generation loss across a dozen saves.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve the image quality?

No. PNG preserves exactly what is in the JPG, including its existing compression artifacts. The file gets larger without getting better. The benefit is that further edits and re-saves will not degrade it any further.

Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. Detail already discarded by JPG cannot be recovered. What converting to PNG does is stop any further loss, so the image will not degrade again on the next save.

Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.

Are my JPG files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are read and written by your own browser and never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the converter will still work.
