How to convert WebP to PNG

Converting WebP to PNG stops any further quality loss and gives you a file that supports transparency, which is useful if you plan to edit the image further.

  1. Click the Choose Files button and select your WebP files.
  2. PNG is already selected as the output. Click the gear if you want to adjust quality or resize.
  3. Click Convert, then hit Download to save your PNG files, or grab them all as a ZIP.

Built for WebP files

Drop in as many WebP images as you like and they all come out as PNG. You can also change the output on any individual file if you need a mixed batch.

◉

Keep the quality

Adjust quality per file and resize on the way through. Formats without transparency get a clean white matte instead of the black edges most converters leave behind.

🔒

Nothing is uploaded

Your files are read and written by your own browser. They are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no size or file-count limit.

More image tools

Three separate tools, all running the same way — entirely inside your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The compressor is the one to use when you want a smaller file without changing its format — it can hit an exact target file size, which the converter cannot. The resizer handles exact dimensions and ready-made presets for Instagram and YouTube, including common sizes like 1920×1080 and 1080×1080.

A few things are built into this converter and need no separate tool:

  1. Compress without converting — pick the same format as your input and lower the quality slider to shrink a file while keeping its type.
  2. Resize — open the gear on any file and set a maximum width; the height follows automatically.
  3. Images to PDF — choose PDF as the output to turn a photo or scan into a document.
  4. Make a favicon — choose ICO as the output to produce a browser icon from any square image.
What is a WebP file?

WebP stands for Web Picture format. WebP was built by Google specifically for the web. It can compress either lossily or losslessly, supports transparency, and is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at matching visual quality.

Some older desktop software and a few printing services still do not accept WebP.

What is a PNG file?

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. PNG is a lossless format, which means every pixel is preserved exactly as it was. It also supports transparency, so it is the usual choice for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic with sharp edges or text.

Because nothing is thrown away, PNG files of photographs are often several times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.

Why people convert WebP to PNG

Almost always compatibility. WebP is fully at home in a browser but is still refused by a surprising amount of software outside one — older versions of Photoshop, several print and publishing tools, some content management systems, and a number of email clients. PNG is accepted essentially everywhere.

Transparency carries across cleanly, so alpha in the WebP survives into the PNG. Two things to know: the file will get bigger, sometimes considerably, and if your WebP is animated you will get a single still frame, because PNG holds one image. Convert to GIF if you need the motion preserved.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated WebP when I convert it to PNG?

You get the first frame only, as a still image. PNG stores a single picture and has no animation support. If you need to keep the animation, convert the WebP to GIF instead.

Will converting WebP to PNG improve the quality?

No. Detail already discarded by WebP cannot be recovered. What converting to PNG does is stop any further loss, so the image will not degrade again on the next save.

Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.

Are my WebP files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are read and written by your own browser and never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the converter will still work.
