Why JPG remains the universal default
JPG has been the default photo format since the 1990s, and that history is exactly why it still matters: every device, every piece of software, every upload form on the internet accepts it without question. When something rejects a HEIC, WebP or AVIF file for no clear reason, JPG is almost always accepted.
That universality comes at the cost of transparency support, which JPG has never had, and lossy compression, which discards some detail on every save. For photographs destined for the widest possible audience — social media, email, printing — it remains the safest choice on the whole site.
