What is a JPG file?
JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice in order to produce a much smaller file.
JPG cannot store transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG degrades it a little each time.
What is a AVIF file?
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. AVIF is the newest of the mainstream web formats. It generally produces the smallest file of any of them at a given quality, supports transparency, and handles gradients and flat colour especially well.
Support outside browsers is still patchy, and not every browser can create AVIF files even though nearly all can display them.
JPG to AVIF: roughly half the size
At matched visual quality AVIF typically lands around 50% smaller than JPG, which is a bigger jump than JPG to WebP delivers. If you are optimising a page that is mostly photographs, this is the conversion with the largest payoff.
As with any lossy-to-lossy conversion you are re-encoding an image that has already been compressed once, so work from the highest quality JPG you have rather than one that has been saved repeatedly. Expect the encode to take noticeably longer than other formats — it runs on your device, and AVIF asks a lot of the processor.

Is AVIF a good replacement for JPG on a website?
For photographs, yes — it typically halves the file size at similar quality. The usual approach is to serve AVIF with a JPG fallback using a picture element, so browsers that cannot read AVIF still get an image.
Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?
No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.
