What is a TIFF file?
TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format. TIFF is the standard in printing, publishing and archiving. It is lossless, supports very high bit depths, and can carry multiple pages in a single file.
Browsers cannot display TIFF, and the files are large, so it is unsuitable for the web.
What is a JPG file?
JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice in order to produce a much smaller file.
JPG cannot store transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG degrades it a little each time.
TIFF to JPG: taming scanner and print files
TIFFs usually arrive from a scanner, a print workflow or an archive, and they are usually enormous — a scanned A4 page at 600 dpi can run past 100 MB. Converting to JPG typically cuts that by 95% or more while remaining perfectly readable for anything viewed on a screen or attached to an email.
Two structural features of TIFF to be aware of. It can hold multiple pages in one file, and it can store CMYK colour from print workflows. Browsers read neither of these well, so a multi-page TIFF gives you the first page, and a CMYK TIFF may open with shifted colours or fail to load at all. Single-page RGB TIFFs, which is most of them, convert without incident.

What happens to a multi-page TIFF?
Only the first page is converted. TIFF can hold many pages in a single file, but browsers read just the first. For a multi-page scanned document, dedicated PDF software will handle all the pages properly.
Will I lose transparency converting TIFF to JPG?
Yes — JPG cannot store transparent pixels, so any transparent area has to be filled with a solid colour. This tool fills with white, which is what most people expect. Many converters fill with black and leave you with dark edges. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP or AVIF instead.
Does converting TIFF to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly, by design. JPG uses lossy compression to make the file smaller. At the default quality of 85 the difference is invisible on most images. Raise the quality slider if you are working with fine detail, text or flat colour.
Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?
No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.
