How to convert PNG to GIF

Converting PNG to GIF makes the image easier to share and use in places that expect GIF files.

  1. Click the Choose Files button and select your PNG files.
  2. GIF is already selected as the output. Click the gear if you want to adjust quality or resize.
  3. Click Convert, then hit Download to save your GIF files, or grab them all as a ZIP.

Built for PNG files

Drop in as many PNG images as you like and they all come out as GIF. You can also change the output on any individual file if you need a mixed batch.

◉

Keep the quality

Adjust quality per file and resize on the way through. Formats without transparency get a clean white matte instead of the black edges most converters leave behind.

🔒

Nothing is uploaded

Your files are read and written by your own browser. They are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no size or file-count limit.

More image tools

Three separate tools, all running the same way — entirely inside your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The compressor is the one to use when you want a smaller file without changing its format — it can hit an exact target file size, which the converter cannot. The resizer handles exact dimensions and ready-made presets for Instagram and YouTube, including common sizes like 1920×1080 and 1080×1080.

A few things are built into this converter and need no separate tool:

  1. Compress without converting — pick the same format as your input and lower the quality slider to shrink a file while keeping its type.
  2. Resize — open the gear on any file and set a maximum width; the height follows automatically.
  3. Images to PDF — choose PDF as the output to turn a photo or scan into a document.
  4. Make a favicon — choose ICO as the output to produce a browser icon from any square image.
What is a PNG file?

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. PNG is a lossless format, which means every pixel is preserved exactly as it was. It also supports transparency, so it is the usual choice for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic with sharp edges or text.

Because nothing is thrown away, PNG files of photographs are often several times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.

What is a GIF file?

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF stores a maximum of 256 colours per image and supports simple animation. It is the oldest format still in common use on the web.

The 256-colour limit makes GIF a poor choice for photographs, which end up visibly banded. For still images PNG is almost always better.

PNG to GIF: a step down, deliberately

GIF is limited to a 256-colour palette. Converting a photograph or anything with a gradient means those colours have to be approximated, which produces visible banding or a speckled dithering pattern. Flat graphics with a handful of colours — simple icons, line art, basic diagrams — survive the trip fine.

Transparency also degrades. PNG stores 256 levels of opacity per pixel; GIF stores one bit, so each pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible. Soft anti-aliased edges become hard and jagged. Convert in this direction when something specifically demands a GIF, not for quality or size reasons.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my image look grainy after converting PNG to GIF?

GIF can hold only 256 distinct colours. Anything with gradients or photographic detail has to be approximated using dithering, which appears as a speckled or banded texture. Images with few flat colours convert without this problem.

Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.

Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are read and written by your own browser and never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the converter will still work.
