How to convert to AVIF
This page converts any supported image into AVIF. AVIF is the newest of the mainstream web formats. It generally produces the smallest file of any of them at a given quality, supports transparency, and handles gradients and flat colour especially well.
- Click the Choose Files button and select any images you want as AVIF.
- AVIF is already selected. Change it on any individual file if you want a mixed batch.
- Click Convert, then download your AVIF files individually or as a ZIP.
Anything into AVIF
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF can all be turned into AVIF here, in a single batch if you like, with no limit on how many files you drop in.
Keep the quality
Adjust quality per file and resize on the way through. Formats without transparency get a clean white matte instead of the black edges most converters leave behind.
Nothing is uploaded
Your files are read and written by your own browser. They are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no size or file-count limit.
More image tools
Three separate tools, all running the same way — entirely inside your browser, with nothing uploaded.
The compressor is the one to use when you want a smaller file without changing its format — it can hit an exact target file size, which the converter cannot. The resizer handles exact dimensions and ready-made presets for Instagram and YouTube, including common sizes like 1920×1080 and 1080×1080.
A few things are built into this converter and need no separate tool:
- Compress without converting — pick the same format as your input and lower the quality slider to shrink a file while keeping its type.
- Resize — open the gear on any file and set a maximum width; the height follows automatically.
- Images to PDF — choose PDF as the output to turn a photo or scan into a document.
- Make a favicon — choose ICO as the output to produce a browser icon from any square image.
What is a AVIF file?
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. AVIF is the newest of the mainstream web formats. It generally produces the smallest file of any of them at a given quality, supports transparency, and handles gradients and flat colour especially well.
Support outside browsers is still patchy, and not every browser can create AVIF files even though nearly all can display them.
Converters by format
Every conversion into a single format, on one page:
AVIF: the newest format, and the trade-off it makes
AVIF compresses harder than anything else on this site — often half the size of a comparable WebP, and a fraction of PNG or JPG — while keeping transparency and higher bit depths than either format offers. For a page where every kilobyte of image weight matters, it is currently the strongest option available.
The cost is encoding time. AVIF's compression is computationally expensive, and because this tool encodes entirely in your browser rather than on a server, a large image can take several seconds on an older machine. Support is solid in current Chrome, Firefox and Safari 16+, but older devices and most non-browser software still cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions
What can I convert to AVIF?
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF can all be converted to AVIF on this page. Drop in a mixed batch and they will all come out as AVIF.
Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?
No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files are read and written by your own browser and never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the converter will still work.
