How to convert JPG to WebP

Converting JPG to WebP makes the image easier to share and use in places that expect WebP files.

  1. Click the Choose Files button and select your JPG files.
  2. WebP is already selected as the output. Click the gear if you want to adjust quality or resize.
  3. Click Convert, then hit Download to save your WebP files, or grab them all as a ZIP.

Built for JPG files

Drop in as many JPG images as you like and they all come out as WebP. You can also change the output on any individual file if you need a mixed batch.

◉

Keep the quality

Adjust quality per file and resize on the way through. Formats without transparency get a clean white matte instead of the black edges most converters leave behind.

🔒

Nothing is uploaded

Your files are read and written by your own browser. They are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards and no size or file-count limit.

More image tools

Three separate tools, all running the same way — entirely inside your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The compressor is the one to use when you want a smaller file without changing its format — it can hit an exact target file size, which the converter cannot. The resizer handles exact dimensions and ready-made presets for Instagram and YouTube, including common sizes like 1920×1080 and 1080×1080.

A few things are built into this converter and need no separate tool:

  1. Compress without converting — pick the same format as your input and lower the quality slider to shrink a file while keeping its type.
  2. Resize — open the gear on any file and set a maximum width; the height follows automatically.
  3. Images to PDF — choose PDF as the output to turn a photo or scan into a document.
  4. Make a favicon — choose ICO as the output to produce a browser icon from any square image.
What is a JPG file?

JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice in order to produce a much smaller file.

JPG cannot store transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG degrades it a little each time.

What is a WebP file?

WebP stands for Web Picture format. WebP was built by Google specifically for the web. It can compress either lossily or losslessly, supports transparency, and is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at matching visual quality.

Some older desktop software and a few printing services still do not accept WebP.

JPG to WebP: worth it once, not repeatedly

WebP generally reaches the same perceived quality as JPG at roughly 25–35% fewer bytes, which is why it has become the default for image-heavy websites. For a page loading twenty product photos, that is a real difference in load time.

The catch is that you are re-encoding one lossy format into another lossy format. The JPG has already thrown detail away; WebP now makes its own independent decisions about what to discard. Once is fine and generally invisible. Converting back and forth between the two repeatedly will visibly soften the image, so keep an original somewhere and convert from that.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?

A small amount, because both are lossy formats and the image is being re-encoded. At the default quality setting it is not visible on a normal photo. What you should avoid is repeated round trips between JPG and WebP, which compound the loss each time.

Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.

Are my JPG files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are read and written by your own browser and never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the converter will still work.
