What is a BMP file?
BMP stands for Bitmap. BMP stores pixels with no compression at all. That makes it simple and completely lossless, and it is still used by some Windows software and older imaging tools.
Files are very large — often ten times the size of the same image as PNG — and it has no place on a modern website.
What is a JPG file?
JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice in order to produce a much smaller file.
JPG cannot store transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG degrades it a little each time.
BMP to JPG: the largest size reduction of any conversion here
BMP applies no compression whatsoever. Every pixel is written out in full, so a file's size is simply its width times its height times three or four bytes. A 4000 by 3000 photograph occupies around 48 MB before it contains anything interesting. The same image as a JPG is routinely under 2 MB, making this the most dramatic reduction of any conversion on this site.
BMP files also rarely carry EXIF metadata, so there is no camera information, no capture date and no orientation flag to preserve or lose. What you see is what converts.

Why are BMP files so much larger than everything else?
Because BMP stores every pixel uncompressed. There is no algorithm reducing the data at all — the format simply writes the raw pixel values to disk. This is why converting to JPG or PNG produces such a large reduction.
Does converting BMP to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly, by design. JPG uses lossy compression to make the file smaller. At the default quality of 85 the difference is invisible on most images. Raise the quality slider if you are working with fine detail, text or flat colour.
Is there a limit on file size or how many files I can convert?
No. Conversion runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so there is no upload, no queue and no cap. Very large images may simply take a moment on a slower device.
