Why choose 640×360?

640×360 is a landscape image of 230,400 pixels (0.23 megapixels) in a widescreen 16:9, mostly used for small 16:9 video previews and embeds.

▢

16:9 landscape shape

The widescreen 16:9 proportion decides how your photo is framed: plan the subject around that shape before you crop.

🎯

The exact size needed

640×360 is the exact size for small 16:9 video previews and embeds, so your image is shown as-is instead of being re-scaled or cropped by the platform.

🖨

Prints 2.13×1.2 in at 300 DPI

That is 5.4×3 cm at photo quality, or 4.3×2.4 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.

💾

About 36 KB–72 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 640×360 saves to roughly 36 KB–72 KB at good JPG quality; WebP is usually 25–35% smaller.

✨

Sharp results

A 12 MP phone photo has 53× more pixels than 640×360, so resizing down keeps it sharp.

✂

Framing control

Filling 640×360 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

Where 640×360 is useful

16:9 without the weight. 640×360 keeps the widescreen shape of HD video at a fraction of the file size. It is a good fit for preview images on listing pages, video poster frames for small embedded players, and in-article images that do not need full HD.

Frame grabs. If you are making a poster image for a 360p video, match the video's size exactly so the player does not letterbox or scale.

Check the source shape. A 4:3 photo will stretch sideways if forced to 640×360. Crop it to 16:9 first with the cropper and then resize. Screenshots from a laptop are usually 16:10, so they only lose a thin strip.

Not for YouTube custom thumbnails. YouTube asks for at least 640 pixels wide but recommends 1280×720. Use the YouTube thumbnail page for that.

File size. 640×360 JPGs are typically 25–70 KB, fast enough for pages with many previews.

Scale up the same shape: 1280×720, 1024×576. Same height in 4:3: 480×360.

Frequently asked questions

Is 640×360 the same aspect ratio as 1920×1080?

Yes. Both are 16:9 — 640×360 is exactly one third of 1920×1080 on each side. You can scale between them without cropping or distortion.

What aspect ratio is 640×360?

640×360 has a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. Images with a different shape have to be cropped or padded to fit it.

How big will a 640×360 image print?

At 300 DPI (photo quality) 640×360 prints at 2.13×1.2 inches (5.4×3 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 4.27×2.4 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.

How large is a 640×360 file?

A photo at 640×360 is usually 36 KB–72 KB as a JPG, and about 25 KB–50 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.

Will my photo lose quality at 640×360?

No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.

Can I resize to 640×360 without cropping?

Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 640×360. Without it, the image fills 640×360 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 16:9 shape are trimmed.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
