Getting the Facebook cover photo right

The Facebook cover photo is the first thing people see on your profile, and it is shown in two shapes — wide on computers, almost 16:9 on phones.

🖥

Desktop: about 820×312

A long, thin strip across the top of your profile on a computer.

📱

Phone: 640×360

Taller and narrower, so the sides are trimmed — keep the subject centred.

◯

Profile picture overlap

The round profile picture covers part of the lower-left area. Keep it plain.

Under 100 KB loads fastest

A JPG of this size is normally small; compress it further only if it is not.

💾

About 42 KB–84 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 851×315 saves to roughly 42 KB–84 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

✂

You choose the crop

Filling 851×315 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 51% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

One cover, two different crops

Computers and phones cut it differently. Facebook shows the cover at about 820×312 on a computer but 640×360 on a phone. The phone view is taller and narrower, so it trims the left and right edges. Keep faces and words in the middle third and they appear on both.

Mind the profile picture. Your round profile picture overlaps the lower left of the cover on a computer, and sits further in on phones. Leave that corner plain — sky, wall or texture — rather than putting a face or text there.

Light files load fastest. Facebook notes that covers load quickest as a JPG under about 100 KB. After resizing, a photo at 851×315 is usually well under that; if not, run it through compress to 100 KB.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Facebook cover photo size?

851×315 pixels is the recommended upload. Facebook displays it at about 820×312 on computers and 640×360 on phones, so keep the important part in the centre.

Why is my Facebook cover cropped on my phone?

The phone app shows the cover at 640×360, which is narrower than the computer view, so the left and right edges are cut. Anything in the middle third stays visible on both.

Is the Facebook Page cover the same size?

A business Page uses the same layout. If you want extra sharpness on high-resolution screens, the Page cover resizer makes a larger 1640×624 version of the same shape.

Can I use a video as my cover?

Pages can use a cover video; personal profiles use a photo. For a photo, 851×315 is the size to resize to.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
