When a landscape post beats a square

Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 4:5 (portrait). A 1080×566 image is the landscape extreme: nothing is cropped in the feed.

The trade-off. Landscape posts take up the least screen height as people scroll. Use them for panoramas, group photos and wide scenes; for portraits and products, 1080×1350 (4:5) gets more attention.

Profile grid. The grid shows a trimmed centre section of each post, so keep the subject near the middle.

Same shape as link previews. 1.91:1 is also the Open Graph shape; for that use 1200×630.

Square version: 1080×1080.
