Getting the Facebook square image right

Square images are the most predictable shape on Facebook: shown in full in the feed, used for carousel cards and easy to reuse on other networks.

▢

Never cropped in the feed

A square shows completely on phones and computers alike.

🔄

Carousel-ready

Carousel cards are square — matching sizes make a smooth swipe.

🛒

Ideal for products

Centred products on a plain background look tidy in a square.

🔁

Reusable

The same square works on Instagram, LinkedIn and X.

💾

About 220 KB–450 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 1200×1200 saves to roughly 220 KB–450 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

✂

You choose the crop

Filling 1200×1200 from a 3:4 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

When a square is the right choice

Same look everywhere. A square is shown uncropped in the feed on both phones and computers, so what you design is exactly what everyone sees. That makes it the default for product shots, quotes and announcements.

Carousels need matching squares. Facebook carousel cards are square; if every card is the same 1200×1200 size, the swipe looks smooth and nothing jumps or gets cut.

From a landscape photo a square keeps only the middle of the picture. Drag the preview to choose the part to keep, or tick the fit option to place the whole photo on a plain background instead.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a square Facebook image?

1200×1200 pixels is a good square size for posts and carousels; 1080×1080 also works. Squares are shown uncropped on phones and computers.

Is 1080×1080 or 1200×1200 better for Facebook?

Both are square and both look sharp. 1200×1200 gives a little more detail for zooming; 1080×1080 matches Instagram exactly if you post to both.

Why does Facebook crop my carousel images?

Carousel cards are square, so wider or taller images are trimmed. Resize every card to the same square first.

Can I keep my whole photo in a square?

Yes — tick the fit option. The photo is placed inside the square with plain bands instead of being cropped.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
