Getting the Discord PFP right

A Discord PFP appears in every chat, member list and profile pop-out. A high-resolution square keeps it crisp wherever it is shown.

Animated PFPs require Nitro; stills work for everyone.

About 41 KB–82 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 512×512 saves to roughly 41 KB–82 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

You choose the crop

Filling 512×512 from a 3:4 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

A PFP that reads in a busy chat

Upload big, shown small. Discord shows avatars as small circles beside messages and a bit larger on your profile. A 512×512 upload gives it plenty of detail on high-resolution screens, and Discord scales it down cleanly.

Centre the subject. The circle hides the corners. Characters, faces and logos should sit in the middle with a little room around them.

Animated PFPs need Nitro. GIF avatars only animate with Nitro. For a still PFP a PNG or JPG at 512×512 is all you need. The minimum is 128×128; see the exact 128×128 avatar page if you need it small.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Discord PFP be?

Any square of at least 128×128; 512×512 is a crisp choice. Discord shows it as a circle, so keep the subject centred.

Why is my Discord PFP blurry?

It was probably small to begin with. Start from a larger image; a 512×512 square stays sharp.

What is the difference between a PFP and an avatar on Discord?

They are the same thing — your profile picture. This page makes a high-resolution 512×512 version; the avatar page makes the exact 128×128 minimum.

Can I set a different PFP per server?

Yes, with Nitro you can set a per-server avatar. It uses the same square format.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
