Resize Image to 96×96

96×96 is a density-scaled icon size — it is what a 48-pixel icon becomes on a 2× screen. Android uses it for launcher icons at the xhdpi density, and it appears in web app icon sets. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Need a smaller file instead? Compress or convert.

Why choose 96×96?

96×96 gives a square canvas with a 1:1 ratio and 0.01 MP of detail. People most often need it for avatars, icons and thumbnails.

▢

1:1 square shape

The square (1:1) proportion decides how your photo is framed: plan the subject around that shape before you crop.

🎯

Where it is used

96×96 suits avatars, icons and thumbnails. Using the exact size avoids a website scaling or cropping your image on its own.

Prints 0.32×0.32 in at 300 DPI

That is 0.8×0.8 cm at photo quality, or 0.6×0.6 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.

💾

About 1 KB–3 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 96×96 saves to roughly 1 KB–3 KB at good JPG quality; WebP is usually 25–35% smaller.

Sharp results

A 12 MP phone photo has 1,323× more pixels than 96×96, so resizing down keeps it sharp.

Framing control

Filling 96×96 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

96×96 and screen density

Screens describe sizes in logical units and then multiply them for density. A 48-unit icon is drawn with 48 real pixels at 1×, 96 at 2×, and 144 at 3×. That is why 96×96 appears so often: it is the 2× version of the very common 48-unit icon.

Android launcher icons. Android's classic launcher icon is 48dp. For the xhdpi density bucket that works out to 96×96 pixels. Modern Android apps usually supply adaptive icons from a larger source, but many build tools and older projects still ask for this exact file.

Web app and favicon sets. Some favicon generators and site templates include a 96×96 PNG alongside 32×32 and 192×192. If yours asks for it, supply it; otherwise the larger sizes cover it.

Start big. Resize down from a 512×512 or larger master rather than up from something small — you cannot add detail by enlarging. Keep a small margin around the symbol so rounded or circular masks do not clip it.

PNG with transparency is the right format for icons.

Related icon sizes: 64×64, 128×128, 180×180 for Apple touch icons, and 512×512 for your master file.

Frequently asked questions

What does 96×96 correspond to in dp or CSS pixels?

On a 2× density screen, 96×96 pixels is 48×48 dp or CSS pixels. That is the standard size for many launcher and touch-target icons, so 96×96 is the sharp version of a 48-unit icon.

What aspect ratio is 96×96?

96×96 has a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Any size with the same ratio — for example 98×98, 100×100 — can be scaled to it without cropping.

How big will a 96×96 image print?

At 300 DPI (photo quality) 96×96 prints at 0.32×0.32 inches (0.8×0.8 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 0.64×0.64 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.

How large is a 96×96 file?

A photo at 96×96 is usually 1 KB–3 KB as a JPG, and about 1 KB–2 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.

Will my photo lose quality at 96×96?

No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.

Can I resize to 96×96 without cropping?

Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 96×96. Without it, the image fills 96×96 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 1:1 shape are trimmed.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
