About 320 KB–650 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 1080×1920 saves to roughly 320 KB–650 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

You choose the crop

Filling 1080×1920 from a 3:4 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

Building a Reel from photos

Every frame the same size. When a Reel is made from photos, each one is scaled to fill the screen. Mixed shapes zoom in by different amounts and the Reel looks jumpy. Resize all of them to 1080×1920 together and they line up perfectly.

Captions sit low. Reels show the caption, audio name and account name at the bottom and buttons on the right. Keep important parts of each image in the upper and central area.

Title and end cards. A plain first frame with three or four words tells viewers what the Reel is about; an end card can point to your profile or link. Both work best at the full 9:16 size.

Frequently asked questions

What size should images for an Instagram Reel be?

1080×1920 pixels (9:16), the same as the video. Keep text away from the bottom and right edge, where captions and buttons appear.

Why do my photos zoom in on Instagram Reels?

Reels fill a 9:16 screen. Photos of another shape are zoomed and cropped; resizing them to 1080×1920 first stops that.

Can a Reel use the same images as a Story?

Yes, both are 1080×1920. Just remember Reels put the caption and buttons in slightly different places.

What about the Reels cover?

The cover is also 1080×1920, but your profile grid shows only a 3:4 part of it. Use the Reels cover resizer.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
