Resize Image to 512×512
512×512 is the standard master size for icons: Android launcher icons, Play Store listings, Discord server icons and avatars, Twitch profile photos and the top of most favicon sets. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Need a smaller file instead? Compress or convert.
Drag the preview to choose which part of the image is kept. The same framing is used for every image in the batch.
Why choose 512×512?
512×512 gives a square canvas with a 1:1 ratio and 0.26 MP of detail. People most often need it for app icons, Discord server icons and AI-image inputs.
1:1 square shape
Every 512×512 image has a square (1:1) ratio, so anything you design for it keeps the same proportions on every screen.
The exact size needed
512×512 is the exact size for app icons, Discord server icons and AI-image inputs, so your image is shown as-is instead of being re-scaled or cropped by the platform.
Prints 1.71×1.71 in at 300 DPI
That is 4.3×4.3 cm at photo quality, or 3.4×3.4 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.
About 41 KB–82 KB as JPG
A typical photo at 512×512 saves to roughly 41 KB–82 KB at good JPG quality; WebP is usually 25–35% smaller.
Sharp results
A 12 MP phone photo has 47× more pixels than 512×512, so resizing down keeps it sharp.
Framing control
Filling 512×512 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

512×512 as an icon master
512 is a power of two, which is why it became the icon standard — every smaller size you are likely to need (256, 128, 64, 48, 32, 16) divides into it exactly, so downscaling produces clean edges instead of half-pixel blur. Build at 512 and derive everything else from it.
Use PNG. This is not a stylistic preference for icons: JPG cannot do transparency, and launcher icons, Discord servers and favicons all need it. JPG also introduces ringing around hard edges, which is exactly what an icon is made of.
Design for the smallest size it will be shown at, not the largest. An icon that looks detailed at 512 often turns to mush at 32. One strong shape, high contrast, no thin outlines and no small text. Check it by viewing the result zoomed out before you ship it.
Android in particular applies its own mask — circle, squircle or rounded square depending on the launcher — so keep the important part of the mark well inside the frame rather than running it to the edges.
Once you have the 512×512 master, PNG to ICO will turn it into a real multi-size favicon file, and 128×128 covers the mid-size slots.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 512×512 the recommended icon size?
Because it is a power of two, so it downscales to 256, 128, 64, 32 and 16 with no fractional pixels and no blurring. Building the master at 512 and generating the smaller sizes from it gives cleaner results than designing each size separately.
What aspect ratio is 512×512?
512×512 has a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Any size with the same ratio — for example 500×500, 480×480 — can be scaled to it without cropping.
How big will a 512×512 image print?
At 300 DPI (photo quality) 512×512 prints at 1.71×1.71 inches (4.3×4.3 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 3.41×3.41 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.
How large is a 512×512 file?
A photo at 512×512 is usually 41 KB–82 KB as a JPG, and about 29 KB–57 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.
Will my photo lose quality at 512×512?
No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.
Can I resize to 512×512 without cropping?
Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 512×512. Without it, the image fills 512×512 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 1:1 shape are trimmed.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
