Getting the TikTok video cover right

The cover is uploaded at full 9:16 size but shown as a 3:4 tile on your profile, so the middle of the image does most of the work.

▦

3:4 grid tiles

The profile grid shows about the middle 1080×1440 of the cover.

About 320 KB–650 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 1080×1920 saves to roughly 320 KB–650 KB at good quality — well within the upload limit.

You choose the crop

Filling 1080×1920 from a 3:4 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick the fit option to keep everything.

Covers that work in the feed and on your profile

Your profile grid crops it. On your profile, video covers are shown as 3:4 tiles — roughly the middle 1080×1440 of the full frame. Text near the top or bottom of the cover is cut off there, so keep the title in the middle.

Use a custom image, not a random frame. TikTok lets you pick a cover frame from the video and add text. A designed cover with a short, bold title makes a profile look organised and tells visitors what each video is about.

Mind the buttons. In the feed the right side and bottom of the frame are covered by buttons and the caption, so keep faces and text in the central area.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a TikTok video cover?

1080×1920 pixels (9:16), the same as the video. On your profile grid it is shown as a 3:4 tile, so keep the title in the middle 1080×1440 area.

Why is my TikTok cover cut off on my profile?

Profile tiles are 3:4, shorter than the 9:16 video. The top and bottom of the cover are hidden there.

Can I upload my own cover image on TikTok?

Yes, depending on your app version you can choose a frame or upload an image for the cover. Resize it to 1080×1920 first.

Is a TikTok cover the same as an Instagram Reels cover?

Both are 1080×1920 with a 3:4 grid crop, so one design can serve both. See the Reels cover resizer.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
